The article i read was about the feeling guilty for buying Apple products. The name of this was Should You Feel Guilty For Buying Your IPhone?, written by Steve Kovach, and published January 31,2012. This article interested me because i have an IPhone and other apple products that i use on a daily basis. Apple is one of not if the most popular companies all over the world. People buy millions of these products every week and are used by almost everyone in the Nichols community.
Actually i do feel guilty for using a product that people put their own blood sweat and tears into on a daily basis. The China based factories Faxconn being the one in the article, have awful working conditions as the article states and the people suffer just to make a living. The workers live in dorms on the work site and work sometimes 12 hour shifts, and the factories are open 24 hours a day. One of the workers in China had an explosion go off right in front of him and burnt of almost all of his skin, resulting in death a few days later. These are just some of the problems occurring in the factories making these products that people use everyday.
As people know Apple is a very rich company and has nearly 100 billion dollars in the bank. The workers have started to act on the work conditions by starting a boycotts to make condition's better. The author of the article thinks that Apple can take some of the money from the high cost of their products to create better working conditions for the workers. But in that case customers in the US would end up paying more than what they already pay for an already expensive product. Also stated in the article is the choice to move factories to the US but still the company would have to pay more for the labor in the US than in China.
As the article states "its all about money" is a true statement. I agree because a lot of businesses in the world are all about money and if they do not make a profit it can hurt the company very much. And in order to make a profit most companies try to go to countries and start factories to make a bigger profit while paying workers a small wage for their hard work, which i do not agree with. Companies should try their hardest to make each working environment a safe and healthy work place.

I found this blog to be very insightful. I had no idea that such a big company like Apple would lower themselves to treat their employees like crap in order to get on top of the competition. It is horrible of the working conditions in China. I personally do not own an Iphone but I do have an Ipod. Now that I know that people are putting their blood, sweat, and tears to make these apple products for Americans, I will no longer give them my business. Its sad to hear a business say “its all about the money” because that should be farther from the truth. Too many companies nowadays are getting too greedy and becoming way to powerful for their own good. The big businesses like Apple need to learn how to prioritize by their biggest priority being on the employees and working conditions. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this article I completely agree with Kyle. I would have never expected a company like apple with all their worth and money they have that they would treat their employees like this. I just recently got the iphone s and if I know about this before it may have impacted my decision. Its too bad that a compnay like apple that almost everyone has some product is all about the money and all they care about is showing them the money.
ReplyDeleteI honestly don't agree with this because I have an iphone myself. Iphones are basically what everyone has now a days. I didn't regret buying my iphone at all. I always want an updated version of a new phones that come out. Yea, when new phones come out it be like 300 or 400 dollars. That money could go towards something else. You can buy many other things with that money then the iphone. But I like the iphone and i feel like if someone likes something so much they should just get it. Here in this world money comes and go. So it really should'nt matter how much you spend on an iphone at all. The apple company is making alot of money due to the iphone, but I feel like they are doing a good job making all that money. Because the iphone is a really good phone to have.
ReplyDeleteYo Kyle,
ReplyDeleteI thought this was an interesting article to read because I figured iPhones were made in factories, but I had no idea that the working conditions from where they were made were bad. Unfortunely, I have to disagree with Vicki... I understand you (Vicki) have an affection for iPhones and all but the article is about the blood sweat and tears that were put in to make the phone, not how nice the phone works. Kyle is not saying he hates the iPhone, but he is saying that he disagrees with the way they are produced. For instance, Diamonds are nice but who would want them if people were harmed in getting them? Yeah it's a strecth comparing iPhones to diamonds but I hope you'll get the gists of things. But Kyle, overall I thought that your article was a good read.
