Facebook

In the article published on February 7, 2012  Over 3 years later, "deleted" Facebook photos are still online” by Jacqui Cheng, Ars Technica brings up the point of pictures still being accessible after being deleted and how that effect Facebook users.  Facebook first came out around 2004; now in 2012 the social network has more than 800 million users.  Concerns of deleted Facebook photos come up more often than any other problem with Facebook for many reasons.  The obvious reasons are avoiding family drama, recently employment issues, or if a user has uploaded a photo of a friend without their permission.  Facebook has stressed that the pictures will delete off the users page, but anyone can find the .jpg direct link and view the deleted photo.  Facebook is now working on trying to permanently removing the photos off the network after 45 days.  After three years users feel that Facebook should have already fixed this problem.

What does this mean for Facebook and their Users?

This problem could mean a lot for both ends.  If Facebook does not quickly work on the demands of their users’ concerns, there could be a possible decrease in Facebook users.  This is obviously bad for business.  Since this is the era of technology some companies before hiring a person, look them up on Facebook.  If at a point there are some inappropriate pictures of a user, he or she might not get the job.  This commonly happens to teenagers and college students now days.  Sometimes a user does not even know what is being posted about them.  I always hear “watch what you put on Facebook”.  But in some cases we do not have control of what are friends or other people post about us.

Tips on becoming more “Facebook Friendly”
Ø  Make sure to change your privacy settings
Ø  Remove Yourself From Facebook Search Results
Ø  Protect Your Albums
Ø  Protect Against Published Application Stories
Ø  If there are any pictures already up. Ask a friend to take them down, or block yourself from them
Ø  Be careful of what information you post on you Facebook

  1. I agree that Facebook should change their policies on their deleting of pictures. It isn’t right to have pictures online not deleted if you so wanted them to be. There are embarrassing pictures put on Facebook that people wish they could just delete online. I sure hope that they come up with a new rule on the pictures. Some times as teenagers and young adults we don’t do the most intelligent actions and one of those actions is taking pictures and putting them on Facebook. Although we should learn how to have self-control, we should also be able to have our pictures deleted from Facebook and off online. From this article and your explanation I have learned about this. I never knew about this before. This concerns me and thank you for informing me on the topic. It is always good to have knowledge on all those sort of things.
