This week I was assigned to read the article "Verizon and Redbox team up to battle Netflix" written by David Goldman just recently on February 6th. The article talks about the fortune 500 company Verizon and DVD kiosk company Redbox teaming up to stream video. The other major company that does this is Netflix, which is by far the most popular at this time. Last month Netflix said that its competition only streamed 10 percent of what they did. There wasn't many details given out about what exactly Verizon and Redbox plan on doing.
The one thing they did say is they are planning on having new updated content. This is one of Netflixs major problems. People are always complaining about their lack of new movies and shows. The people who commented on the article think that these companys joining up could be very good for the consumers. If they can actually put up a decent fight against Netflix it could drive the companys to produce better and better features to keep their customers. Right now there is nothing driving Netflix to constantly get better. They have no real competition.
In my opinion I really think Verizon with the help of a company like Redbox that already has a start in the video business to become bigger than Netflix. Verizon is obviously one of the most sucuessful companys in the world. As most people know they are a major provider of phone, telovision and internet services. They have been extremly sucuessful in all three of those categories, I really can't see them taking on a project in which they will fail. The company has always been credible and has never let me down as a Verizon user. The other companys Netflix is competiting with are Amazon and Hulu. Amazon is a big company that is pretty widely known, but everyone thinks of them as another ebay almost. I never knew they had a video service until I read this article. I don't think they are really trying to put up a fight against anyone, just trying to bring in some extra income. Hulu is a company I never heard of until recently. They are certaintly getting bigger and establishing themselves but they really just don't compare to Verizon.
