Permanent Facebook Pictures?

Have you ever wondered where our pictures on Facebook go after we delete them? Well according to the CNN article, “Over 3 Years Later, "Deleted" Facebook Photos Are Still Online” written by Jacqui Cheng and Ars Technica, claims that the old pictures that were thought to be deleted are still on the web. The process by which they delete the photos permanently takes a “reasonable period of time”, which they claim they are working on to improve. The system Facebook have to delete photos has never worked to its full potential. Facebook announced “that photos remaining online are stuck in a legacy system that was apparently never operating properly”. Facebook is now working on producing new software that will finally delete all the photos in only a month. It is hard to believe everything Facebook says though because they tend to stretch the truth and tell what the people want to hear. Facebook not deleting pictures has been an ongoing problem for the past couple years now and they still have not fixed their problems. There have been many reports from unhappy people claiming that pictures that they tried to delete years ago are still available on the internet with a direct link. Not being able to delete pictures has been a problem because kids have been getting harassed over pictures that were meant to be deleted. Unfortunately, cyber bullying is very prevalent among teenagers nowadays, which is why I believe that Facebook should step up their game and fix this before something bad results from it. (This article was updated on February 7th, 2012.) This article was interesting because it goes to show you that my parents were right the whole time about how “nothing ever gets deleted off the internet!” speech I heard about ten thousand times. This article is also a great example of how future employers can see almost anything with technology, even if you thought you already deleted it three years prior.

  1. Pat I think it is interesting that pictures don’t get deleted. I have heard about this issue before but I have never actually taken it seriously. I always thought they really get deleted once you click delete. Apparently that’s not correct and I think that is a horrible problem. There are a number of reasons I believe this to be an issue, my biggest concern is how future employers have access to most deleted photos. It looks really bad to a employer if they see someone they are interviewing doing a keg stand. Sometimes pictures are put up by other people and you want them to take it down, so technically that’s out of our hands and it’s unfair that it’s not getting deleted. I also liked how you talked about cyber bullying because that is a huge issue right now and it really needs to be addressed by Facebook. Overall I think you did a wonderful job with this article!
